We use the uncountable nounnewsto mean ‘information or reports about recent events’. It takes a singular verb:

If we want to talk aboutnewsas an individual thing, we can usebit of, pieceoforitem of(more formal):
I heard a couple of interestingpieces of newsthe other day about the company’s plans for expansion.

We saythe newswhen we refer to the television or radio programme that gives reports of recent events:
