These words are all used when you are not available to do something or talk to someone.

The most common word for this, and the word with the broadest meaning, isbusy.Busyimplies that you have other things planned and that is why you are unavailable.

I'm busy all morning - can we meet up in the afternoon?
I'm sorry, but according to her schedule, she's busy with meetings today.

The opposite ofbusyisfree.

I can meet any time on Monday - I'm free all day.

If you aretied up, you are not available because you are doing other things, usually meetings.Tied upis common in business contexts.

I'll be tied up in meetings until 3.00pm, but could meet after that.
I can meet on Thursday, but I'm completely tied up the rest of the week.

Unavailableis also used in business contexts to say that you are busy with something else.

The CEO is currently unavailable - may I take a message?

The opposite ofunavailableisavailable.Unavailableis much more common thanavailablein this use.

"Can you come to the meeting?" "Yes, I'm available."

In formal contexts, if you are not able to do something because you have something else planned, you can say you areengaged.Engagedgenerally refers to social plans and not work plans.

I can't come to tea - I'm engaged elsewhere.

In UK English, if you cannot do something because you are doing something else, you can say that youhave (got) something on.Have (got) something onis usually used of social plans.

UKI'll have to miss the party - I have something on that night.
